Floorcloth Care & Cleaning

Black Dog Gallery floorcloths are made of heavy cotton canvas primed with 3-4 coats of paint on each side. Design colors are painted on this base and then topped with 3 coats of a clear, non-yellowing protective sealer. A finished floorcloth has 10-14 layers of paint at completion. Finally, the floorcloth is topped with a coat of paste wax. These many layers give the floorcloth a lasting, durable finish.

The floorcloths can be easily cleaned on a regular basis with a damp mop or with mild soap and water. We strongly recommend occasionally re-coating with a paste wax (bowling alley wax). This helps keep the daily wear in the wax surface and helps protect the paint. With time, both oil-based and latex paints tend to dry-out and become less flexible, so care should be taken when moving or rolling-up the floorcloths. Warming the floorcloth with a portable hairdryer will help make it flexible. Do not fold or crease as the many layers of paint are thick and may crack.

The floor under the floorcloth should be clean and free from all debris. The floorcloth will mold itself to any unevenness in the surface, including wood grain. A thin Oriental rug pad will help prevent wood grain and joints in tile from appearing through the surface of the floorcloth. The floorcloth may be secured to the floor using double-sided carpet tape.
