Antiques
We specialize in antique maps of the Chesapeake Bay area and natural history prints including Mark Catesby, Georg Ehret, George Edwards and Alexander Wilson. Our 18th century prints are original etchings and copper plate engravings. To create each print, the plate was inked and run through a press, printing the image in a single color -- usually black. from there each print was colored by hand using watercolors made from natural pigments.

The works we procure and have available in our shop and through online sales are true 18th century prints, created in the 1700s. If you're looking for a piece of 18th century American art, in most cases we can track it down and obtain it for you. Please scroll down for our reproduction map offerings.

ReproductionsFry-Jefferson Map
To compliment our antique prints, Black Dog Gallery carries a select group of reproduction maps and natural history prints. Many of these prints and maps are not readily available or are extremely costly in the antique market. We are particularly proud of our historic maps, including many roller maps of varying sizes.

The images on this page of the Fry-Jefferson (right) and Mitchell (below) maps are examples of the quality maps we are able to obtain for our customers. Like other prints, the originalsSmall portion of Fry-Jefferson Map of these maps were hand-painted and reflect the known "lay-of-the-land" at the time they were created.

Our reproduction maps are hand-painted in-house and the coloring is based on the very rare antique examples in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection.
