18th Century Frames & Framing

18th Century Frame ProfilesBlack Dog Gallery is well known for its unique and historically accurate frames. Each frame is based on 18th Century profiles, many of which we have had custom created just for our use after extensive research. These profiles are not only true to the 18th century, they are also not available commercially, which allows us to produce one-of-a-kind frames. We work with a handful of mills that can provide us with the type and quality of wood our work requires, kiln dried to our specifications.

Unique features in our frames include double stepped-out corners and ornamental Kent corners. These beautiful designs are based on those of printmaker William Hogarth and William Kent, an English architect.

Each of our frames is hand made, hand assembled and and finished using traditional methods, including gusso, bole, water and oil gilding and hand-rubbed finishes. We can custom match just about any color or finish.

Our commitment to accuracy lets us create museum-quality pieces that grace the rooms of some of the finest 18th Century dwellings in the country. You can find examples of our works in the halls and rooms of:

  • Monticello, Charlottesville, VA
  • Colonial Williamsburg Foundation: Dewitt Wallace Gallery, Williamsburg Inn, Peyton Randolph House and St. George Tucker House
  • Russel House at Historic Charleston Foundation, Charleston, SC
  • Francis Land House, Virginia Beach, VA

In many cases our clients send us their artwork (call or contact us for shipping recommendations) and we work closely with them via phone, fax and email to recommend the most appropriate frame for their piece. If shipping the artwork is not an option we can work with a local framer or on-site curator.

Below are just a few examples of the 18th century frame profiles available in our studio. We invite you to stop by, call or contact us using our online form and we will be happy to answer any questions and discuss your period framing needs. Please note, the artwork in each frame found on this page is period art.
